COPE Book Review by Dr. Danielle Lindner, Ph.D. – July 2021
Living With Your Body and Other Things You Hate by Emily Sandoz & Troy DuFrene
When people ask for my favorite self-help book on body image, my go-to is Living With Your Body & Other Things You Hate by Emily Sandoz & Troy DuFrene. I have to admit – when I first came across the book, the title gave me pause. As a psychologist who studies body image, of course I don’t want my clients or research participants (or anyone else!) to hate their bodies. For many people, though, the idea of loving one’s body seems really impossible. That’s why I like this book so much. It’s about calling a truce with your body so you can live the kind of life you want to live. The book offers information and exercises designed to help people nonjudgmentally accept their bodies, better tolerate difficult body image thoughts, emotions, and experiences, and participate in the kinds of activities that are important to them.
If you’ve ever wanted to do something but haven’t done it because of how you feel about your body, this book might be worth a read.
